Virgil Walton Chambless

A memorial service for Walton Chambless, 84, of Cleburne will be conducted June 29, 2011, at the Rosser Funeral Home of Cleburne. The Rev. Danny Crosby will officiate. Walton Chambless died June 26, 2011, in Cleburne, Texas.

He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Atlanta, Ga., to Virgil Walton Chambless Sr. and Gussie Irene Register. A veteran of World War II, Walton served in the Pacific theater with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944-46.

A graduate of Georgia Tech, he followed a business career for several years until he was called into service as a career missionary with the International Mission Board, S.B.C. He and his wife, Lorena, served 25 years in Latin America, primarily in Mexico and Chile.

After retiring from service overseas, he moved to Cleburne where he owned and operated the Sonshine Christian Bookstore for five years. He had been a member of the Cleburne Rotary Club and had served as a board member of the Literacy Volunteers of America in Cleburne.

He was also a member of the Johnson County chapter of Gideons, International. In recent years he has served in various ministries of First Baptist Church in Cleburne.

Walton was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena, who passed away Feb. 24, 2007.

He is survived by sons, Larry Chambless and wife, Terrie, of Cleburne and Eddie Chambless and wife, Karen, of El Paso, Texas; daughters, Rebecca Falkner and husband, Robert, of Kansas City, Mo., and Cathy Craven and husband, Jim, of San Antonio, Texas; brother, John Chambless of St. Simons, Ga.; sister, Edna Deckbar of Roswell, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
